Even though Lakewood is a bedroom community, the Riley area is quite blessed with several amenities to make life a little easier. Probably the number one amenity is the four star Riley Elementary School, which is within walking distance to many Lakewood homes. Other amenities in the Lakewood area include the Lakewood Apartments, across the street from the Elementary School; an old fashioned General Store, the Riley Post Office, and two general practicing physician’s offices. After all, what community the size of Riley has two physician’s offices? In addition there are two Churches, Karen’s Kids Day Care, Terre Haute Savings full service bank at State Roads 159 & 46, and a First Financial Bank ATM two blocks from the Elementary School.
The Lakewood area also has a package liquor store, hair salon, barber shop, Mini Storage Units, car wash, Dollar General, not to mention the Pizza City
about 1/4 mile west of Lakewood. Just 5 minutes west of Lakewood on State Road 46 is the Walmart Supercenter Shopping Center.
Honorable mention should also go to the Riley Recreation League. The League has a total of 6 fields, 4 of which are lighted. The League serves Cal Ripken, Babe Ruth and ASA softball. Boys & girls ages 4 through 15 enjoy the summer recreation. In fact, over 800 children participated in 2007. It has grown so much it has become more of a regional ballpark, rather than just the Riley Area.Access to 1-70 is just five minutes west on State Road 46. Honey Creek Square Mall, with 4 anchors, 90 specialty stores & a food court is only ten minutes away, either via 1-70 or secondary roads. Four golf courses are within ten minutes or less. It is just ten minutes to the Hulman Regional Airport and the Rose Hulman campus. Indiana State University and downtown Terre Haute are about 15 minutes in travel time via State Road 46.
